Tea Tree Oil-1 Me-0

I keep wondering why I seem to have so many random mishaps happen. Then I have an ah-ha moment and realize that I’m meant to share them all here with you. In my what will one day be a famous series a la Emily Post. Except I’ll tell you what you need to know before you even know you need to know it. Pretty clever.

So the latest mishap occurred when I decided to try out the merits of tea tree oil for a pesky scalp issue I’ve been having. (Yep full disclosure here) I purchased a bottle of must be amazing cause it’s from Whole Foods tea tree oil and was on my way.

With the help of my unwitting partner in crime, my scalp was soon covered in the oil. I’m a more must be better kind of girl. Recommend one squirt of conditioner or one dab of eyecream? I’ll double it up just to be safe thank you very much.

It certainly felt like it was working as my scalp was tingling. The smell was unpleasant, but bearable. And I felt like it was a small price to pay for a natural miracle. When my scalp stopped feeling like it was on fire lightly tingling, I pretty much forgot about it and carried on with my night. I decided to keep the treatment going overnight for good measure.

Later that night I woke-up feeling like I was suffocating. And I kind of was… with my face smashed in a pillow covered in the oil. There was also a cloud of tea tree oil that was permeating the entire room. Potent stuff! Unintentionally, I’d created a tea tree infused room. Definitely not the recipe for a good night’s sleep.

So let’s get to the fun stuff–morals of the story. Sometimes less is more. A little bit goes a long way. Read the instructions first. When reading the instructions after the fact, it advised one to two drops.

So yep all of these adages that have been tried and true are once again proven when it comes to using tea tree oil. Which I am still a fan of, but in moderation and under careful supervision. And when I just can’t moderate, I’m going with coconut oil which smells better and is rumored to be a great scalp treatment too. I’ll keep you updated!

  1. Sorry I didn’t warn you that tea tree oil can be some potent stuff! I guess I forgot to tell you about our episode with the tea tree oil. Once again the apple doesn’t fall to far from the tree!
