Kitchen Tales

I’m prepping to make a crock pot and thought I’d share a cautionary tale. Yep another one. They keep coming so I’m going to keep sharing in the hopes I’ll provide some sort of helpful advice. One of my favorite mainstays on the elimination diet was chicken breasts cooked in the crock pot with taco seasoning. Of course I couldn’t use my normal go-to taco packet seasoning as it wasn’t diet approved so I was pretty proud of myself for putting together my own. Who knew the taco seasoning packet was merely a tasty mix of cumin, paprika, chili powder, garlic powder, red pepper flakes, onion powder, salt and pepper (and probably some other weird preservatives that I definitely do not need). Pretty fool proof and no chopping required which made it an A+ recipe in my book.

I did manage to pull it off a few times with tasty results. And probably got a bit complacent. A dash here, a pinch there, mix it up a little by adding some green chiles. Yep, I certainly knew my way around the kitchen. Hmmm, maybe I was ready for one of those reality chef shows. Home cooks of America or whatever. As I slipped into a daydream of the judges being awed by the simplistic yet complex nature of my chicken fiesta, I vigorously shook the cumin spice bottle over the chicken. I was abruptly shaken out of my daydream by an aroma I wasn’t expecting. Cinnamon. All over my fiesta chicken!

One of those things is not like the other and some things just were not meant to be paired. And I can tell you cinnamon and chicken is not a good combo. I may or may not have continued on bravely trying to save the dish and cancel out the cinnamon with a ton of spices. I’d advise less daydreaming and more attention when it comes to recreating my fiesta chicken. And if you simply must daydream, by all means hide the cinnamon.
