So I fell off the wagon with my Writing 101 course with everything that we’ve had going on recently. It felt like a good time to review the prompts I missed, and give it another whirl. Soooo here goes…a walk down memory lane to my favorite childhood meal. For some reason, the first thing that came to mind were the turkey packets I pretty much lived on as a teenager. You know, the frozen turkey packets with the yummy gravy? A quick spin in the microwave, and voila thanksgiving on my plate! The must have accessory was soft, white sandwich bread to sop-up the gravy.
So yeah I guess I really, really liked that. But if we are gonna talk childhood food, my favorite meal experience was the nights we had pizza made from the Chef Boyardee box kit. We always had a Chef Boyardee pizza kit ready to turn an uneventful evening into the best pizza night ever. The kit came complete with crust mix, sauce and grated cheese. I was completely fascinated by the fact that the powdery mix transformed into a ball of dough. My dad then placed it in water, and it’d float up and we’d have to make sure it stayed under the water. We’d get to roll out the dough and go to town making customized pizzas with supplemental toppings like pepperoni, mozzarella cheese, green peppers and mushrooms.
I loved picking exactly how many pepperonis went on the pizza, arranging the different ingredients in the perfect formation and the fact that it was a rectangle and not a circle. I loved that it was a family event that involved everyone. Dad was the dough guy and Mom was all-around help as us kids built the pizza. We impatiently waited as it cooked, rising to perfect crispy perfection and melted cheesy goodness. We salivated as Dad cut the pizza, and grabbed our chosen slices still piping hot. Never one to wait on anything good, I could never resist immediately taking a bite. A burnt mouth always ensued, but I never learned and carried on devouring the slices of heaven.
